It all began with a mission to do things better.
Key was founded by former banker, Tony Newham, in 2007. Having spent almost three decades working in commercial banking, he identified there was a need to make commercial finance more accessible and bespoke to the borrower. He set on a mission to build a brokerage that had a knowledgeable and ethically motivated team of brokers behind it, so that businesses could receive unbiased commercial finance advice and funding solutions that worked for them.
Today, Key is well known for its ethical approach, as well as our ability to source finance in even the most complex situations. All of this is possible because of the foundations put in place on day one and the strong relationships we’ve built with lenders and other industry professionals over the years.
Our team is the key to our continued success.
Unlike other commercial finance brokers, all of our financial consultants have worked in banking in some capacity, whether it be as a commercial lending manager or an underwriter at the forefront of the decision making. This means that when clients come to us for support, we can look at their borrowing requirements with both hats on.

We have that very experience and relationship with our clients. The difference? We’re independent so we don’t need to pigeonhole our clients with products that fit best, instead we have the flexibility to find the right solution to unlock their business potential.

October 2007
Tony Newham founded the business after leaving HSBC.
May 2008
Moved into our first office.
October 2008
Office Manager joins the business
December 2012
Purchased offices near Huddersfield town centre due to growth of the team.
January 2015
Liz joined, bringing expertise in residential buy-to-let funding.
February 2016
Steve Midgley joined, specialising in health sector finance.
May 2016
David Menaghan joined, focusing on corporate and trade finance.
September 2017
Tim Groves joined, specialising in real estate and development finance.
July 2021
Michelle joined from Leeds Building Society, later passing her CeMap qualification.
Present
The business has expanded UK-wide, including London, the South East, and Scotland.
